Цель курса


приобретение студентом коммуникативной компетенции,
уровень которой на отдельных этапах языковой подготовки позволяет и

пользовать иностранный язык практически как в профессиональной (прои

водственной и научной
) деятельности, так и для целей самообразования. Под
коммуникативной компетенцией понимается умение соотнести языковые
средства с конкретными сферами, ситуациями, условиями и задачами общ

ния. Соответственно, языковой материал рассматривается как средство
ре
а-
лизации речевого общения, при его отборе осуществляется функционально
-
коммуникативный подход.

обучением общению, курс иностранн

Higher education plays an important part in the life of any country as it pr

In all the industrial countries standards of living are steadily changing; this
means that the kind of education, which was good enough thirty years ago, is not

means that styles of teaching, quality of learning materials1 and organization of the
university itself have to

Besides, knowledge and information which comes through the mass media
must also be taken into consideration. This information explosion3 has affected
every field of Study, especially, of course, in the natu
ral and applied sciences and
new approaches to students‱ training and instruction4.

At present a new system of education is introduced in this country

educatio
n system. This computer system of learning helps working professionals to
continue their education while remaining at their jobs. This system enables people


study. Distance

learning has developed over years5 from satellite video courses to
modern videoconferencing through personal computers.

The academic year usually lasts 9 months and is divided into two terms (s

year students obtain thorough

instructions in the
fundamental sciences of mathematics, physics, chemistry and drawing as well as
computer engineering and a number of others. The curricula are enriched and
broadened6 by instructions in such subjects as foreign languages, history and ec

courses in this subject. Specialized study and courses will help students to become

Education is a process through which culture is preserved, knowledge and

That the problem of pollution and ecology has become the most important one
for mankind is evident to all. The more civilization is developing, the greater the
ecological problems are becoming. Air and water pollution by industry is now

reaching tremendous proportions. In our era it is changing from a national to an i
n-
ternational problem, especially in territories where rivers cross several countries.
The seas and oceans are also becoming seriously polluted. A similar situation is

ping in the atmosphere. It is known that many cities throughout the world
suffer from air pollution.

However, our scientific knowledge and technological advancement make it
possible to eliminate it if people use good will1 and make considerable inves

It is known that much is being done in the world today for the development of
non

traditional sources of energy. Without them the Earth cannot support its pr

sent popul
ation of 5 billion people and probably 8 billion people in the 21st cent

ry.

Now we are using traditional power sources, that is, oil, natural gas, coal and
water power with the consumption of more than 50 billion barrels per year. It is e
v-
ident that these

sources are not unlimited.

That is why it is so important to use such renewable sources of energy as the
sun, wind, geothermal energy and others. Research is being carried out in these
fields.

One of the most promising (

power stations with direct transformation of solar energy into electricity on the b

sis of photo

effect. It was Russia that was the first in the world to develop and test
a photoelectric battery of 32,000 volts

and effective area of only 0.5 sq.m., which
made it possible to concentrate solar radiation. This idea is now being intensively
developed in many countries.

However, the efficiency of a solar power station is considerably reduced b

cause of the limited ti
me of its work during the year. But it is possible to improve
the efficiency of solar power stations by developing different combinations of solar
power stations and traditional ones

engineers are working at the
problem of developing electric power stations with
the use of a thermal

In Kamchatka there are geothermal power stations operating on hot water

planned that plants working on the energy of the solar heat provided by
the sun will be built on a larger scale.

That different wind energy plants are being developed is also well

These energy plants can be small (of several kilowatts) and large po

It is important that all these advances in developing new sources of energy
and improving the old ones help to solve the energy problem as a whole and they
do not have any negative effects on environment.

If you come to a large city,
you will find out that there are all kinds of things
to do outdoors: there is almost every sport you can imagine, there are parks and
gardens to visit. You can go sightseeing either on your own or in a group, and if
you like walking you can go on organized

THE AMERICAN FAMILY


Most American families

consist of a mother, a father, and three or

four chi

dren living at home. There may be relatives

grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins,
and in

laws in the same community, but
American families usually maintain
separate households (1).

This familial structure is known as the "nuclear family."
It is

unusual for members of the family other than the husband, wife, and children
to live together. Occasionally an aging grandparent may live
with the family
, but
this arrangement is usually not considered desirable.

Although
the nuclear family unit is econo
mically independent of the rest of
the family (2),
members of the whole family group often maintain close kinship
ties. Visiting between parents and their married children and between married sisters
and brothers is frequent when they live close to each ot

In the American family the husband and wife usually share important decision
making. When the children are old enough

COPERNICUS



Men have always been fascinated by the stars. Centuries ago, as people
looked up at the sky,
they saw that some stars

across the sky as bright points of light. So they named these "wandering" stars
be seen by ancient men. Their names in order from the sun are Mercury, Venus,
Mars, Jupiter
and Saturn.

The ancient Greeks

were great watchers of the sky and also great thinkers. As
they watched the stars

, it was natural for them to think that the

Venus and Mars.

For centuries, men believed this was how the stars moved. To explain the

ity in Poland, about the year A.D. 1500, a young scientist named Nicolaus
Suppose, Copernicus said, the earth was not at the centre of the stars and the pla

was instead. Suppose that the earth itself was a planet just like
Mars and Venus and that the earth and all the other planets, rotating on their axes,
were round and round the sun at different distances from it. "After all," he said,
"since light comes fr
om the sun, it is only proper that the sun and not the earth
should be at the centre of everything."
The ancient Greeks had made the mi

take of thinking

(2) that because the stars and planets seemed to move as they
looked at the sky, the earth must be stil
l. If you have sat in a train and looked out at
the trees rushing by, it is easy to understand their mistake. The trees seem to be
moving backwards, but really it is the train that is moving forwards.

Not all of Copernicus' ideas were right. Although he th

the moon went round and round the earth, he also thought the stars were fixed on a

everyone would think of his new ideas that he did not write them down in a book
until he was almost dying.

THE SUN


The sun is a
star. It is not by any means the biggest of the stars. It looks much
bigger than any star because it is closer to us. It is only about 93,000,000 miles
away! All the other stars are much, much farther away than that.

surface is so great that a person would be crushed by his own weight.



The sun is far too hot to be s

they give off light. Shooting up from the sun there are great rose

ers of glowing gas. They are called solar prominences. Some of them shoot up
more than 100,000 miles from the sun's surf

SPACE COOLING


A new method of cooling that can generate cryogenic temperatures of 200 °C
below zero without the use of electricity and with almost no moving parts has been
Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The refrigerator
used for the purpose was recently tested to

Студенты выполняют контрольные работы согласно учебному плану и
сдают их на проверку в установленное вузом время, но не позд
